**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted, jumping straight into this new phase was an intimidating thought. Reflecting on it now, I can appreciate how much I’ve evolved over the last academic year. It’s been a period of personal growth, challenges, and numerous enjoyable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Taking the Plunge: Building Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably one of your concerns as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can wholeheartedly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my course and throughout the university—have become like a second family. It only took a bit of casual conversation with others who were feeling the same way.
So, what did I discover? The essential truth is to leap in early. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, there are numerous icebreaker events and opportunities created to assist you in connecting with others. Most crucially, simply be yourself. With such a varied mix of individuals at university, you are sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Academic Hurdle
Another challenge I faced was getting accustomed to the workload and the increased complexity of the material. Transitioning from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated and to question your abilities, especially when you see others studying and assume they’ve got everything under control.
What aided me in navigating this was understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding something tough, it’s likely that others are too. The best piece of advice I can offer is to reach out for assistance—whether from your classmates or your instructors. Mastering the skill of seeking support is undoubtedly one of the most vital lessons to learn in your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department are truly remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we experience. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication with us and were always eager to address our concerns.
I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to engage with faculty, which proved to be priceless. There are numerous avenues to cultivate relationships with staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university journey. My most significant takeaway here? Use the support that’s offered to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was largely unjustified. With the vast array of support from faculty and fellow students, those feelings of uncertainty and fear can be managed. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s possible to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
As I move forward, I’m thankful for the trials and growth I’ve encountered. To anyone about to commence their own university journey: take the plunge, seek help, and remember to savor the experience.
