**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A little over ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with a mix of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted, diving headfirst into this new chapter was a formidable challenge. Reflecting back now, I realize that this year has been marked by personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered early on was the quest to make friends. Beginning university can feel like a lot to handle, and if you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern on your mind as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.
Now, looking back, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It all began with small interactions—starting casual conversations with those who were experiencing the same feelings as I was.
So, what insights did I gain? I learned that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, that’s okay—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to bond with others. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is vital. Imperial boasts a rich community, and you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another notable challenge was acclimating to the demanding coursework and the heightened complexity of the information. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re managing to keep pace.
What assisted me in this adjustment was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The primary lesson I learned throughout my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty members, reaching out for guidance can profoundly impact your experience.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly wish for students to thrive and demonstrate understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us and addressed our queries.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support services until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. Early in the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My main takeaway? Utilize the support structures available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Key Takeaways
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to entering university—and even during the academic year—was often without basis. With the vast array of support options available from both staff and peers, I realized I was never truly isolated.
Above all, I learned how to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines while making time for joy and enjoyment. This year has been a transformative journey, and I look forward to what lies ahead.
