**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been introverted and withdrawn, plunging into the unknown seemed overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences, I recognize the extent of my learning and how far I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

One of the most daunting tasks I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is often a primary concern. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before the term officially commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve developed some of the most cherished friendships of my life. These bonds, formed through shared experiences and collective support, have become akin to a second family for me. What aided me most was taking incremental steps—initiating friendly small talk with others who were equally apprehensive as I was.

If there’s one lesson I’ve absorbed, it’s that taking initiative early on is beneficial. If you’re not quite ready to jump in right away, don’t fret—there will be a plethora of icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Facing Academic Obstacles

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.

What helped me maneuver through this was the understanding that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was experiencing similar struggles, and if I was confused about something, it was likely that others were too. The primary takeaway? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or the academic faculty, reaching out for support can truly make a difference.

### Assistance from Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department has been exceptional. The lecturers and tutors sincerely wish for students to thrive and show understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They maintain transparent communication with us throughout the year, responding to our queries and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly valuable. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, getting to know the faculty is one of the best things you can do for yourself. My recommendation? Capitalize on the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back on this year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the plethora of support offered by both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.

This year has taught me how to balance having fun with navigating the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines. It’s been a path of personal development, and I eagerly anticipate what the future has in store as I continue my education.

To any prospective students reading this: take that leap, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ll discover your niche, just as I have.
