**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A little over ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been a bit introverted, plunging into this new phase of life seemed intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what precisely did I gain from this experience, and what is my current standing?
### Building Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of beginning university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may very well share similar feelings. On my first day moving into my residence, just a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, beginning with casual conversations with others who were equally anxious.
What have I learned? I discovered that taking risks at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. Even when you’re unsure or uncomfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and activities aimed at facilitating interactions. Most crucially, I realized that authenticity is vital. Given the diverse mix of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to connect with those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Confronting the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was acclimating to the academic load and complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your confidence, especially when observing others studying and feeling as though you’re falling short.
What helped me navigate this experience was the understanding that everyone shares the same struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that other students are grappling with it too. The most vital lesson I gleaned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, never hesitate to ask for support.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Regarding faculty, the members of the Materials Science department are outstanding. They truly care about your success and recognize that students encounter various difficulties. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and addressed any concerns we raised. Although I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This experience allowed me to build relationships with the faculty, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are myriad ways to engage with the faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support provided – help is always welcome!
### Concluding Reflections
In conclusion, this year has illustrated that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was largely unfounded. With the extensive support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I have learned to balance having fun with managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
Looking back, I take pride in the progress I’ve made, and I’m eager for what lies ahead.
