**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey that lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of tremendous personal development, various challenges, and numerous joyful moments. But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming new friendships. For many incoming students, this is a primary concern about starting university. I recall my first day moving into my accommodation a few days before the term officially began. I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, feeling too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial and within my course, I have discovered a second family. It all began with small steps—engaging in casual conversations with others who were in similar situations.
What did I discover? Taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease immediately, that’s perfectly fine! Numerous icebreaker events and activities are designed to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, I learned to simply be myself. With such a diverse student body at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who share your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more overwhelming. Being part of such a demanding academic environment can sometimes undermine your confidence. You might glance around and think everyone else has it all figured out, but believe me—they don’t.
One of the most crucial lessons I learned is that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something confounds you, it’s likely others are grappling with it too. The key is to seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or asking for guidance from faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### The Helpful Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish for your success and are very aware of the challenges students face. They are sympathetic and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to address any hurdles we encounter.
I’ll admit, I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until the year’s end, but in retrospect, I wish I had done so earlier. At the year’s start, I took a chance by becoming a well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be a priceless experience. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can have a profound impact. My biggest insight here? Make the most of the support and resources provided to you—you can never have too much help!
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. There’s an abundance of support available, from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in overcoming any challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve discovered how to enjoy myself while managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I contemplate my first year, I am thankful for the personal growth, the friendships, and the lessons I’ve acquired. To anyone getting ready to embark on their university adventure: embrace the nerves, take that chance, and remember—you’ve got this.
