**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I got ready to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was a significant departure from my comfort zone as someone who has always been introverted and reserved. Looking back now, I recognize that this year has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. But what insights did this pivotal year provide, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges of starting university was meeting new people. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably a worry you have as well. On my first day in student housing, right before classes commenced, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly claim that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—bonds that resemble a second family.

So, how did I reach this point? It began with engaging in casual conversations and connecting with fellow students who were experiencing similar feelings. I discovered that taking a courageous step early on is essential. Even if you don’t feel completely prepared, don’t fret—many icebreaker events will arise, providing opportunities to mingle with others. Above all, I learned that authenticity is vital. In such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’ll undoubtedly meet individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing Academic Challenges

Another major challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and intricate course content. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and shifting from the first term to the second term felt even more strenuous. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your abilities when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.

What aided me in navigating this was understanding that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are, too. The best advice I can offer is to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or teaching staff, reaching out is one of the most valuable competencies you can acquire in your first year.

### The Supportive Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They ensure open lines of communication throughout the year and are always available to address inquiries.

While I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I took the initiative by becoming a year well-being representative. This experience enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, becoming acquainted with the staff is one of the best decisions you can make. My key takeaway? Utilize the support that’s offered—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced—both pre- and post-university—was often misplaced. There is a wealth of support available, whether from faculty or fellow students. I’ve come to realize that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned to manage exam stress and deadlines while embracing moments of joy and relaxation.

As I ponder my first year, I’m thankful for the challenges that pushed me beyond my comfort zone and the opportunities that facilitated my growth. If you’re about to embark on your university journey, understand that feeling nervous is perfectly normal—but also recognize that you’re stepping into a realm filled with opportunities and support.
