**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and shy, venturing into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I find myself considering the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Fear of Friendship
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you may be experiencing a similar anxiousness. On my initial day settling into accommodations, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to my peers. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These connections have become akin to a second family to me, both within my academic program and throughout the university.
So, what have I discovered? Taking that first brave step is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous chances to engage with others through ice-breaker activities and social gatherings. And above all, just be authentic. With the rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to discover folks who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Facing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic intensity and the heightened challenge of university-level material proved to be another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, with the shift from the first to the second term feeling even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel self-doubt when you observe others studying and perceive yourself as lagging behind. However, one valuable insight I gained was that everyone is navigating the same struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well.
The most crucial lesson I learned in this phase was the significance of seeking assistance. Whether it means turning to your classmates or asking for guidance from faculty, don’t hold back from posing questions. It’s a vital skill that will benefit you throughout your first year and beyond.
### Cultivating Connections with Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the support provided by the Materials department has been exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They keep lines of communication open with us throughout the year, addressing our issues and offering direction. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had accessed it sooner.
One bold move I made early in the year was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely rewarding. There are countless avenues to engage with staff, and I highly suggest taking full advantage of these chances. Whether through formal positions or casual encounters, getting to know the individuals who are dedicated to supporting you can significantly enhance your experience.
### Essential Insights from My First Year
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced—both before embarking on my university journey and throughout the year—was often unfounded. There is a vast network of support available, from faculty to fellow students, and you’re never truly on your own in facing adversities. This year has equipped me with the skills to manage stress stemming from exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of happiness and enjoyment. Most importantly, it has highlighted the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone and seizing opportunities that arise.
For anyone getting ready to embark on their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, be genuine, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance when necessary. You can do this!
