**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself anxious, frightened, and unsure of what lay ahead. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown was a daunting challenge. Now, as I reflect on this academic year, I recognize a time brimming with personal development, obstacles, and countless joyful experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was the task of making friends. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might share the same feelings—it’s a typical concern. On my first day at student accommodation, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent an entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the dearest friendships I could have ever wished for.

These bonds didn’t emerge instantaneously; they were cultivated through small, initial steps—brief conversations with others who were equally inexperienced and uncertain as I was. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with that crucial first step.

What did I discover? First, it’s beneficial to take a chance early on, even if it feels awkward. If you’re not prepared right away, that’s perfectly fine—there are ample icebreaker activities and chances to connect throughout the year. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating Academic Difficulties

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the content. The shift from A-levels to university posed a significant transition, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more evident. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re staying on track.

What assisted me during those times was the understanding that I wasn’t on this journey alone. Everyone was in a similar position, and if I struggled to grasp something, the chances were that others faced the same difficulties too. The essential lesson here? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, asking for help is among the most crucial skills you can nurture in your first year.

### Establishing Relationships with Staff

On the subject of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our issues and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was a leap for me, but it turned out to be one of the wisest choices I made. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My major takeaway? Utilize the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was largely unfounded. With the extensive support options accessible from faculty and fellow students, there’s always a path to surmount challenges. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with enjoyable moments.

This year has been a journey of personal evolution, and I’m eager to discover what the future has in store as I continue my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
