**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I stood on the brink of my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into such a foreign and demanding atmosphere seemed intimidating. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and ample enjoyment, I can’t help but think about the valuable insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Navigating the Challenge of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was the pursuit of friendship. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a significant concern for you as well. On my first day at student housing, I spent hours confined to my room, far too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
The secret to fostering these bonds was taking that first step—initiating brief conversations with people who were just as new and uncertain as I was. With time, these exchanges evolved into deep friendships, and I now feel like I’ve established a second family here at Imperial.
So, what did I come to realize? Firstly, it’s crucial to push yourself beyond your comfort zone right from the beginning. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t be disheartened—there are countless icebreaker activities and chances to connect throughout the year. Secondly, the best approach is to be authentic. With such a wide array of students at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter those who align with your values and interests.
### Confronting Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic demands and levels of difficulty presented another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more intense. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying and seemingly flourishing.
What aided me in overcoming these feelings was the realization that everyone was experiencing similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp a concept, chances were high that others were grappling with it as well. The most vital lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Requesting help is not a sign of inadequacy; it’s an essential skill that will benefit you throughout your university experience and beyond.
### The Remarkable Support from Faculty
One of the highlights of my journey has been the encouragement from the Materials Science and Engineering staff. They sincerely desire student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication and offered numerous avenues for assistance.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had done so much earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was a brave decision for me, but it ended up being immensely fulfilling. It facilitated connections with faculty members, which has proven invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal conversations, becoming familiar with the staff is one of the best things you can do for your own benefit. My most significant takeaway? Make the most of the available support—you can’t have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the apprehensions I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—were unfounded. With the extensive support available from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. This year has taught me how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
To all incoming students reading this: take that plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek help. University is a period for personal development, and you’ll be astonished by what you can accomplish when you venture outside your comfort zone.
