**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in the [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) program. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar felt quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and remarkable moments, I can appreciate how much I’ve grown and how far I’ve moved forward.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be feeling the same way. On my first day in the student residence, just a few days prior to the term beginning, I stayed in my room the whole day, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here at Imperial, both within my program and outside of it, have become like a second family. It merely took stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging in brief conversations with others who felt the same way as I did.

What did I discover? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease initially, don’t stress—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

Adapting to the academic expectations of university proved to be another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level studies was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more challenging. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others study and wondering if you’re keeping pace.

What assisted me during these times was the understanding that I wasn’t alone. Everyone encounters difficulties, and if you’re struggling with something, the chances are others are too. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching faculty. Learning to ask for help may be the most important skill you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Staff

On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely aim for students’ success and understand the trials we endure. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and expressed understanding of our difficulties.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available to me until the end of the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. At the start of the year, I made a brave move by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can create a significant impact on your university journey. My most important lesson? Utilize the support that’s available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, it has imparted so much wisdom. The anxiety I harbored before starting university, and even throughout the year, was often unjustified. With the extensive range of support provided by both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while still embracing moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a voyage of personal development, resilience, and connection. If you’re about to commence your own university adventure, remember that feeling nervous is completely normal—but also know that you’ll have the resources and support to succeed.
