**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Now, looking back on an academic year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I find myself contemplating the lessons I’ve absorbed and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting elements of entering university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. I distinctly recall my first day in student housing, where I spent my time secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever known.

The secret was to take that first step—initiating simple conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same feelings as me. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial. My suggestion? Just be yourself. With such a varied community at university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values. And if you’re not prepared to jump in immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and occasions to connect with new people throughout the year.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the academic demands and complexity was yet another challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to experience feelings of being overwhelmed or to question your capabilities when surrounded by high-performing peers.

What aided me was coming to the realization that I wasn’t alone—everyone was facing the same hurdles. If I had trouble grasping a concept, it was likely that many others did too. The most valuable lesson I took away from my first year was the importance of asking for assistance. Whether reaching out to your classmates or the teaching staff, seeking help is essential.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about the success of students and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing any concerns we expressed.

Although I didn’t make full use of the support services available until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. I also took on the position of a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to foster relationships with faculty—an immensely enriching experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the resources and support systems at your disposal. There’s no such thing as too much help!

### Insights Gained

This year has revealed to me that the unease I felt before and during the university experience was often unwarranted. With plentiful support from faculty and peers alike, I recognized that I was never truly isolated. I also mastered the art of balancing the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and laughter.

Reflecting on my journey, I can see just how much I’ve evolved since those initial days of anxiety. Starting university may appear intimidating, but it simultaneously presents an extraordinary chance for personal growth, the forging of new friendships, and unforgettable memories.
