**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For an individual who had always been quite introverted, venturing into the unknown felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, hurdles, and ample enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traversed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most frightening elements of beginning university was the idea of forging friendships. If you’re a potential student, this could be among your foremost worries too. On my first day of settling into accommodations, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people.

Fast forward to now, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my program and across the institution—have developed into a second family. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating casual conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

What did I discover? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease straight away, there’s no need for concern—there are many icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, just remain yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals at university, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Challenges

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the content. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re falling behind.

What assisted me was reminding myself that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to comprehend, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same struggles. The secret is to seek assistance—whether from friends or academic staff. Learning to reach out for help could be the most valuable skill you cultivate during your first year.

### Support from the Materials Department

Speaking of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The instructors and staff truly want students to thrive and are consistently understanding of the difficulties we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year and are eager to address any issues.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services available until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had accessed them sooner. Assuming the role of a well-being representative for my year was one of the initial steps I took, and it turned out to be a brilliant choice. It enabled me to build connections with staff members, which has proven invaluable. Engaging with staff through roles like this or other opportunities is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself.

The main takeaway? Make the most of the support that’s accessible to you. Whether it’s academic guidance, pastoral support, or simply someone to talk to, you can never have too much help.

### Lessons Acquired

This year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt—both before setting foot in university and throughout the year—was often baseless. With the extensive support from staff and classmates, those feelings of doubt can be mitigated. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone and that it’s achievable to find joy even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.

In hindsight, I observe a year marked by growth, resilience, and unforgettable experiences. To anyone preparing to embark on their own university adventure: take the plunge, embrace the obstacles, and remember to relish the journey.
