**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and withdrawn, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of tremendous personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you could be experiencing similar feelings of unease. On my first day at student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to today, and I am proud to say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, particularly within my program, I’ve discovered a second family.
What has this taught me? Taking that first step to connect with others is essential. Even if you do not feel prepared or at ease, rest assured—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to socialize. And above all, be yourself. With such a varied student population throughout the university, you are sure to find peers who resonate with you.
### Managing the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more significant. Being thrust into such a rigorous environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you see others profundo studying and begin to question your own capability.
What aided me was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others are grappling with the same issues. The crucial lesson here is to reach out for assistance—whether it be from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate in your initial year.
### Faculty Support
Speaking of faculty, I cannot emphasize enough how incredible the professors in the Materials department are. They genuinely want to see you excel and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open, addressing our worries and extending help.
I didn’t fully access the support services offered until later in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a proactive step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position helped me to connect with the staff better, which was immensely beneficial. There are countless opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can be one of the wisest choices you make. My key takeaway is to seize the support available—you can never receive too much help!
### Concluding Reflections
Reflecting on this past year, I have come to realize that the apprehension I felt, both before and during university, was largely misplaced. There is an abundance of support accessible, both from faculty and fellow students, to alleviate those worries. I’ve learned that I am never truly alone, and I have figured out how to enjoy my time while managing the unavoidable tension of exams and deadlines.
