**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fears, and uncertainties as I geared up to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Being someone who has always been introverted and quiet, facing the unknown was quite daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with development, obstacles, and meaningful experiences, I can appreciate how life-changing this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings—it’s a prevalent apprehension. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, lacking the courage to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships in my life.

The pivotal moment arrived when I took the initiative to engage in brief conversations with others who were also feeling anxious. Those small interactions led to the formation of a supportive community here at Imperial. My suggestion? Make that effort early on. Even if you’re not prepared at first, there will be numerous icebreaker events and occasions to meet new people. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse body of students at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with individuals who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even tougher. It’s easy to feel inundated or to question your own capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying who appear to have everything under control.

What helped me navigate those moments was recognizing that we are all experiencing similar struggles. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. The crucial action is to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Developing the habit of seeking help is likely the most critical skill you can cultivate in your initial year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely care about the students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication regarding any challenges we encountered.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the last part of the year, I wish I had discovered it sooner. Early on, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to form connections with staff members, which proved to be an invaluable experience. There are various avenues to foster relationships with staff, and engaging in those can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Embrace the help and resources that are at your disposal—you can never have too much support.

### Reflections Learned

In retrospect, this year has taught me that the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the myriad support options offered by both staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve discovered the importance of embracing challenges, seeking help whenever required, and finding joy even amidst the demands of exams and deadlines.

As I progress, I’m thankful for the personal growth I’ve undergone and the relationships I’ve cultivated. To anyone preparing to embark on a similar path, take heart that the initial anxieties will dissipate, and the prospects for personal and academic growth are limitless.
