**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, taking such a bold step into a major life transition was intimidating. Now, looking back, I reflect on a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what lessons has this year imparted upon me, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections
One of the most daunting aspects I encountered was the quest to make friends. Commencing university can be quite overwhelming, and if you’re a future student perusing this, it’s likely one of your primary concerns. On my inaugural day in the student residence, just days before classes kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.
Now, as I stand here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever known. At Imperial, especially within my program, I discovered a second family. This journey began with simple conversations and engaging with others who were experiencing similar feelings.
What have I discovered? I’ve learned that taking a bold step at the outset of the year is invariably worthwhile. If you aren’t ready or at ease right away, don’t be concerned—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most crucially, I’ve realized that being authentic is essential. In such a diverse student population, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Another notable obstacle was acclimating to the demands of the coursework and its complexity. The transition from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift between the first and second terms was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overpowered or question your capabilities when observing peers studying and flourishing.
What assisted me during this period was the awareness that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, it’s likely there are others who share that sentiment. The most significant lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, reaching out for help can make a significant difference.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and are fully aware of the obstacles we encounter. They show empathy and maintain open channels of communication throughout the academic year to address any concerns.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the start of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to build rapport with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can profoundly enhance your university experience. My major takeaway is to utilize the support and resources available—you can never have an excess of assistance!
### Reflections
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt before university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. There exists a plethora of support systems, from staff to fellow students, to aid you in navigating challenges. I’ve realized that I am never genuinely alone and that it is feasible to balance exam stress and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
This year has been a transformative journey, and I’m thankful for the growth, friendships, and insights it has provided. If you’re on the brink of starting your own university path, take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and remember—you are capable!
