### Reflecting on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was engulfed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been timid and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar was truly daunting. Yet, reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and ample happiness. What insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a potential student perusing this, you may be anxious about this as well. On my inaugural day in the student housing, merely days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day cocooned in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered another family—individuals who comprehend and support me. All it required was for me to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in brief conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

So, what lesson have I learned? Take the initiative early. Even if you feel unprepared, there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. And above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic workload and intensity was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others seemingly excelling.

What aided me in managing this was the understanding that all students share similar struggles. If you are finding something challenging, it’s likely that others are too. The principal strategy is to seek assistance—either from classmates or faculty. This was perhaps the most important lesson I acquired in my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

#### The Outstanding Staff

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the issues we face. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the year’s end, and I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative was one of the best choices I made. It enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual interactions, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best things you can do for your personal growth.

What’s my primary takeaway? Utilize the resources and support networks that are accessible to you. You can never have too much help!

#### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt—both prior to and during my time at university—was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support from staff and peers, I was never truly on my own. I’ve discovered how to manage the stress stemming from exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun.

In essence, this year has been one of development, resilience, and exploration. If you’re preparing to commence your own university expedition, understand that although the path may appear daunting, it’s also brimming with opportunities to flourish, connect, and have a great time.
