**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey that lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who typically exhibits shyness and introversion, venturing into uncharted territory felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can’t help but consider what this experience has imparted to me and where I find myself today.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the task of making friends. Beginning university can be intimidating, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be among your primary worries too. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known—friends who seem like a second family.
What shifted? I took a leap of faith and initiated small conversations with others who were equally inexperienced in this new setting. This imparted a crucial lesson: taking that first step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared initially, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreakers and activities to foster connections with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major hurdle was adapting to the academic demands and complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s simple to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re on track.
What assisted me during those times was the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp a concept, likely, others are too. The best approach is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the instructional staff. This, I believe, is one of the most crucial abilities to cultivate in your first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### Establishing Relationships with Faculty
On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to flourish and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early on, I made the bold decision to become a year well-being representative, which provided me an opportunity to forge significant connections with staff members. This turned out to be an invaluable experience. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, getting to know your instructors and tutors can have a profound impact. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support that’s available to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt—both before embarking on my university journey and during the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to balance the stress of examinations and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
This journey has represented one of growth, resilience, and exploration, and I’m grateful for all the experiences I’ve had thus far. To anyone about to begin their own university journey: take the plunge, seek help, and most importantly, remain true to yourself.
