**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Being someone who has always been quiet and introverted, jumping into this new phase felt challenging. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting experiences I encountered at the beginning of university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, chances are this is a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet fellow students.

Fast-forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships of my life. My classmates have become like a second family, both within my program and throughout the university. All it required was a little casual conversation with those who shared my situation.

What did I glean from this experience? Firstly, it’s always worthwhile to take that plunge at the beginning of the year, even if it feels awkward. If you’re not ready to jump in right away, don’t fret—there are plenty of social events and avenues to engage with others. Secondly, the most important thing you can do is to remain authentic. With a diverse array of individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing Academic Hurdles

Another notable challenge was adapting to the demands of coursework and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It wasn’t always simple to keep my confidence up, particularly when observing others studying and feeling inadequate.

What aided me through this was recognizing that everyone was facing similar struggles. If I was confused about a topic, it was likely that others were too. The primary lesson here? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, looking for help is one of the most crucial abilities to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department have been remarkable. They truly desire for students to excel and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and offering support.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized them earlier. Initially, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to collaborate closely with faculty members. This experience proved to be extremely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Leverage the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With a plethora of support options offered by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

So, to anyone getting ready to embark on their university adventure: take that leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You can do this!
