**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to commence my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For a person who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging straight into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year enriched with growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I realize just how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve advanced.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the outset of university was forming friendships. If you are a prospective student absorbed in this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, I spent countless hours sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment came when I chose to take a chance and initiate small talk with others who were experiencing the same situation as me. Those initial exchanges blossomed into friendships that feel like a second family here at Imperial. My biggest lesson? Be courageous and make that connection early on. If you aren’t quite ready, that’s okay—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, just be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and complexity of content was another major obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more challenging. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities, particularly when you observe others seemingly flourishing.
What aided me was the understanding that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, chances are your peers are as well. The crucial part is to request help—whether from fellow students or the teaching staff. Learning to seek assistance might just be the most beneficial skill you cultivate during your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Staff
In terms of support, the faculty in the Materials Science department have been exceptional. They truly want students to thrive and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication and provided various types of help.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate connections with staff members, which became invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting to know your lecturers and support personnel is one of the best investments you can make for your success. My recommendation? Make the most of the assistance and resources available—you can never have too much support.
### Insights Gained
This year has illuminated that the nervousness I experienced before entering university—and even throughout the year—was frequently misplaced. With the extensive support accessible from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. I’ve learned to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and laughter, and I’ve grown in ways I never anticipated.
As I look back, I take pride in the strides I made and the challenges I tackled. To anyone preparing to start their own university adventure: welcome the nerves, take that initial step, and remember that support is always just a reach away.
