**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself grappling with nervousness, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of embarking on my first-year journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted, venturing into the unknown felt like a monumental task. Now, reflecting back, I realize this academic year has been one of significant growth, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On the day of my move-in, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too scared to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most valuable friendships of my life at Imperial.

What made the difference? It all began with engaging in small conversations and discovering common interests with others who were equally apprehensive. I’ve created a second family here, and that might not have been achievable without taking that first step. My suggestion? Don’t hesitate to push yourself beyond your comfort zone right from the beginning. If you’re not quite prepared, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker gatherings and chances to connect with fellow students. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a diverse student body, you’re bound to encounter individuals who align with your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Adjustment

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel daunted or to question your capabilities when observing others who appear to be succeeding effortlessly.

What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re finding a topic difficult, it’s likely that many others are too. The crucial takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. This is arguably the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year. Don’t hold back from reaching out; collaboration and mutual support are vital in overcoming the hurdles of university life.

### The Value of Support and Community

On the topic of support, the faculty within the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and show empathy towards the challenges we endure. Throughout the year, they fostered transparent communication with us, addressing our worries and providing direction.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was among the best choices I made. It not only allowed me to forge connections with staff but also deepened my understanding of the resources accessible to students. Whether through official roles or informal exchanges, nurturing relationships with staff can be immensely fulfilling. My prime takeaway? Utilize the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

In summary, this year has shown me that much of the apprehension I felt before and during my university experience was often unwarranted. Thanks to the extensive support from both faculty and peers, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. I also mastered the art of balancing exam-induced stress and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fulfillment.

Reflecting upon this journey, I take pride in my progress. The obstacles I encountered have transformed me into a more confident and resilient individual. For those about to commence a similar path, remember that it’s entirely normal to feel anxious. Embrace the adventures ahead, lean on the support surrounding you, and most importantly, savor the experience.
