**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was consumed by nervousness, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone naturally shy and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar was far from my usual comfort. Reflecting now, I recognize a year rich with growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is often the primary concern about beginning university, and I was no different. On my first day at the student residence, just days ahead of the term, I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, too overwhelmed to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. These bonds have grown into a second family for me, both within my course and throughout the university. What shifted? It began with small actions—engaging in light conversations with others who were just as anxious as I was.
The greatest lesson I absorbed is that taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. If you’re not prepared immediately, that’s perfectly fine! Universities provide numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others. Most importantly, be yourself. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and complexity was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level academics was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when witnessing others appear to thrive effortlessly.
What aided me was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find yourself having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are others do too. The essential rule is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to ask for help is perhaps the most crucial skill to cultivate during your initial year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely wish for students to excel and are understanding of the challenges that we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and were always eager to address our issues.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Initially, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative, which enabled me to form connections with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. Engaging with your lecturers and support staff, whether through formal roles or informal interactions, is one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit.
My primary takeaway? Fully utilize the resources and assistance available to you. You can never receive too much support!
### Concluding Thoughts
This year has enlightened me that the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and during my first term—was frequently unfounded. There are numerous support systems available, from staff to fellow students, to assist you in tackling challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to balance the pressures from exams and deadlines with experiences of joy and fun.
Reflecting back, I am proud of how much I’ve grown. My first year at Imperial has been a journey of personal development, resilience, and building connections. To anyone about to begin their own university journey: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ve got this!
