**Thoughts on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with a whirlwind of nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty as I prepared to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had always been introverted and hesitant, embracing this new chapter felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the idea of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might relate. I certainly did. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture outside and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life. My fellow students have morphed into my second family here at Imperial, and it all began with little actions—engaging in casual conversations with others who were just as anxious as I was.

What did I discover? Taking that first step is essential. Even if you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease immediately, don’t be concerned—there will be innumerable icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, just stay true to yourself. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re guaranteed to find those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Obstacles

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the leap from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and appearing to thrive.

What propelled me forward was the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The crucial factor is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. This, in my opinion, is the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the subject of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about our success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They ensure open communication throughout the academic year, fostering a supportive environment for students.

I didn’t make full use of the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I now wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the onset of the year, I decided to step up as a year well-being representative. This experience allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which was extraordinarily beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and utilizing them can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Capitalize on the available support—you can never have too much help!

### Insights Gained

Contemplating this year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even during the year—was frequently unfounded. Numerous support systems are established, from staff to fellow students, to assist you in navigating the challenges.

This year has illustrated to me that I’m never truly alone. It’s taught me how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment. Most importantly, it’s encouraged me to welcome uncertainty and take those leaps of faith, regardless of how intimidating they may initially appear.
