**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was coming next. I was about to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had previously been shy and reserved, plunging into such a momentous life transition felt daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled not only with obstacles but also abundant in personal development, learning, and enjoyment. So, what insights has this year imparted, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this might be one of your main worries as well. On the day I settled into university housing, I spent countless hours sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had.
These bonds didn’t happen instantly—they started with simple gestures, like engaging in casual small talk with others who were equally new and apprehensive. Gradually, these interactions blossomed into a second family. My most significant lesson? Take that initial leap of faith without delay. Even if you aren’t ready or feel uneasy at first, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, just be authentic. With such a wide array of individuals at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who align with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and intensity was another critical challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and apparently thriving.
What assisted me most was remembering that everyone shares similar experiences. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that you’re not the only one—others may feel just as confused. The essential point is to seek assistance. This might be one of the most crucial lessons I absorbed during my first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or looking for advice from faculty, requesting help is a vital skill that can greatly influence your experience.
### Support from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, I must stress how exceptional the Materials department is. The lecturers and staff truly desire to see students succeed and are understanding of the hurdles we face. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year, addressing our worries and providing support.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One proactive step I did take at the outset was becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and I strongly advise taking advantage of these chances. My primary takeaway? Don’t shy away from utilizing the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the abundant support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. This year has taught me how to manage the stresses of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and personal discovery.
To anyone gearing up for university: embrace the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and remember that assistance is always close at hand. University is a period of growth, and with the right mindset, it can also be one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life.
