**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the verge of beginning my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been shy and introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar felt like a significant challenge. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and numerous enjoyable moments, I can’t help but think about the insights I’ve gained and how much I’ve advanced.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most anxiety-inducing obstacles I encountered was the process of making friends. For many incoming students, this is a primary concern when starting university, and I was no different. On the day I moved into my accommodations, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entirety of my time secluded in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known.

The pivotal moment arrived when I made the decision to venture out of my comfort zone and initiate small conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings. That straightforward action of reaching out led me to discover a supportive community here at Imperial. My greatest lesson? Take that jump. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet others will be available. And above all, just be genuine. With the array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic load and the increase in subject difficulty was yet another challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the progression from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your abilities, especially when observing others who seem to thrive.

What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or instructors. Learning how to ask for help is arguably the most valuable skill I acquired during my first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
One of the highlights of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials department staff. They genuinely wish for students to excel and demonstrate understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and offering support.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral assistance until late in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was a challenge for me, yet it became one of the most gratifying decisions. It provided me the opportunity to cultivate relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. My recommendation? Utilize the support systems that are provided. Whether it’s pastoral guidance or academic assistance, you can never have enough help.

### Insights Gained
Upon reflection, this year has shown me that the anxieties I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—were frequently baseless. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to manage the demands of exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and amusement, and I’ve developed in ways I never expected.

To anyone getting ready to begin their university adventure: embrace the challenges, take those leaps, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ll find your way, just as I did.
