**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and shy, venturing into the unfamiliar was not something I was used to. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was making new friends. For countless incoming students, this is probably one of the primary concerns about beginning university. On my first day in student housing, only a few days before the semester was set to start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too scared to go outside and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like family.

How did this transformation occur? It all began with engaging in casual conversations and connecting with individuals who were in a similar situation. The essential lesson I learned is to take that initial leap of faith early on. If you’re not ready or at ease immediately, don’t be alarmed—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, embrace your true self. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adjusting to the demanding workload and the intricate nature of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and moving from the first term to the second felt even more challenging. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your own capabilities when witnessing others studying and seemingly thriving.

What assisted me in overcoming this was recognizing that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, odds are that others are too. The most advantageous action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Learning to request help is likely the most valuable skill you will cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science division at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They foster open lines of communication throughout the year and are always ready to address any concerns.

I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support available until later in the academic year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position helped me forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most crucial takeaway here is to leverage the support systems present—you can never have too much assistance!

### Key Takeaways

In summary, this past year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support accessible from both staff and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to juggle pressures such as exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment, and I’ve come to value the significance of taking courageous leaps.

Reflecting on the past year, I see how much I’ve grown, and I’m eager to discover where the remainder of my university journey will lead me.
