**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of embarking on my first-year journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt like an overwhelming challenge. Now, as I reflect back on an academic year that was rich in personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment, I can’t help but contemplate the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered at the beginning of university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may relate to these feelings. On my very first day in student housing, just days before the term started, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve connected with through this university and my program have become like a second family to me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small chats with others in a similar situation.

So, what did I take away from this? I learned that making an effort right from the start is always a worthwhile endeavor. If you’re not quite prepared or don’t feel at ease initially, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a diverse community at university, you’re sure to encounter those who share your interests and ethos.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adjusting to the increased workload and complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and you begin to wonder if you’re doing enough.

What helped me manage this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear, most likely others are grappling with it too. The essential lesson here is to seek assistance. This is undoubtedly the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year—don’t shy away from reaching out to classmates or faculty for help.

### Assistance from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science team at Imperial is exceptional. They genuinely aspire for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and were readily available whenever we needed assistance.

I didn’t entirely capitalize on the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty, becoming an invaluable part of my experience. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the available resources and assistance—you can never have too much support!

### Important Takeaways from My First Year

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during my university experience was often misplaced. There are extensive support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, to aid you in navigating the hurdles. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone and that it is absolutely feasible to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.

As I look ahead, I am thankful for the personal development, friendships, and experiences I’ve accumulated throughout my first year. To anyone about to start their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You can do it!
