**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about the upcoming journey. I was about to begin my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown was definitely outside my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences, I cannot help but ponder the lessons I’ve absorbed and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the outset of university was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student reading this, you might be feeling similarly—it’s a common concern. On my first day in university housing, a few days before the term officially began, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to now, and I can assert confidently that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. These bonds have evolved into my second family here at Imperial, all beginning with small actions—like initiating conversations with individuals who were just as new and apprehensive as I was.

So, what insight did I gain? Taking that first step to engage with others is invaluable. Even if you feel unprepared right away, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with people. Most importantly, be true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another significant challenge was adapting to the workload and heightened complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was evident, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more formidable. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when witnessing others study and worry that you’re falling behind.

What aided me through this was the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are facing the same issue. The critical point is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or academic personnel. Learning to reach out for support is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and appreciate the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open dialogue with us, addressing our concerns and offering advice.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support accessible to me until later in the year, and I wish I had utilized it earlier. Taking the initiative to ask for help can have a significant impact. Early in the year, I took on the role of a year well-being representative, which provided me with the chance to establish connections with faculty members. This experience became one of the most gratifying parts of my first year. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Leverage the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back on this year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. There are countless resources and support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, to help you tackle challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve figured out how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun.

This year has been a path of growth, and I’m thankful for all the experiences that have shaped me. If you’re preparing to commence your own university journey, understand that it’s perfectly natural to feel anxious—but also recognize that you’ll find your way, just as I have.
