**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year overflowing with growth, obstacles, and memorable moments, I can assert it’s been a life-changing adventure. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-making
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. The initiation of university can be intimidating, and if you’re a future student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, a few days prior to the official term, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Now, looking at where I am today, I can proudly share that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These connections have turned into my second family, both within my course and throughout the university. What contributed to this success? Taking gradual steps, such as initiating light conversations with others who were just as inexperienced and uncertain as I was.

The most significant takeaway I gained is that it’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who share your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and the intricacies of the course content was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was palpable, and the transition from the initial term to the subsequent one felt even tougher. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and assuming they are coping more effectively than you are.

What aided me during those moments was realizing that everyone is in the same situation. If something doesn’t click for you, likely, your peers are wrestling with it too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This might be the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.

### The Encouraging Staff in Materials
Speaking of faculty, one of the remarkable elements of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials department. The instructors and staff genuinely desire for students to succeed and are understanding of the difficulties we face. They foster open communication throughout the year and are always prepared to respond to our queries.

Even though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the end of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Initially, I took a bold step by becoming a Year Well-being Representative, which helped me establish connections with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable opportunity. There are various ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support and resources offered—you can never have too much assistance.

### Closing Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With numerous support avenues available, from staff to fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and leisure, and I’ve developed in ways I never anticipated.

To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: take the plunge, welcome the difficulties, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ll find that the experience is as enriching as it is transformative.
