**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I set out on a path that was both thrilling and intimidating. Beginning my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student felt akin to jumping into the deep end—something my previously introverted and timid self was unfamiliar with. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can’t help but consider what I’ve gained and how much I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was making connections. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my first day in student housing, I spent hours sequestered in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself. Fast-forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life.

What was the turning point? I took incremental steps to engage with others who were experiencing the same uncertainties. A little small talk here and there gradually led to me establishing a second family at Imperial. My main takeaway? Make that effort early on. Even if you’re hesitant, don’t fret—there will be a multitude of icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover others who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adjusting to the academic demands and the escalation in difficulty from A-levels was another noteworthy hurdle. The transition from the first term to the second term felt particularly pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or question your skills, especially when you observe peers appearing to flourish.

What assisted me was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or educators. Learning to ask for help might be the most crucial ability you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely care about students’ success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open communication with us and provided various forms of support.

I didn’t completely make use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but looking back, I wish I had sought assistance earlier. Early in the year, I bravely stepped up to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to build connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal responsibilities or informal interactions, getting acquainted with the faculty is one of the wisest choices you can make. My suggestion? Utilize the help and resources available—there’s no such thing as too much support.

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was largely unwarranted. With the extensive support systems available—from faculty to fellow students—there’s always someone to help you when you need it. I’ve discovered that I’m never completely alone and that it’s feasible to juggle the pressure of exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Looking back, I see a year marked by growth, resilience, and unforgettable memories. If you’re on the verge of starting your own university adventure, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. Take those chances, embrace the difficulties, and trust that you’ll find your niche.
