**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt about what was to come. I was preparing to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been quiet and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was a daunting scenario. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments, I can’t help but consider the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming friendships. Transitioning to university can be daunting, and for many new students, this is often a primary concern. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share my passions and experiences. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally new to this setting.

What have I learned? Taking that first courageous step is always a worthwhile endeavor. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be plenty of social events and chances to meet others. Above all, I learned to embrace my true self. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who connect with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another crucial challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more significant. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re keeping pace.

What assisted me through this transition was the understanding that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The key is to seek help—whether from your peers or teaching staff. This is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of staff, the support from the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and staff are genuinely invested in students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year and are always willing to address any issues.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until near the year’s end, but I wish I had tapped into it sooner. Early on, I took on the role of a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with staff members. This has been an invaluable experience, and I highly encourage finding ways to engage with your department’s staff. They are there to assist, and you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has imparted significant lessons. The anxious feelings I had—both before embarking on my university journey and throughout the year—were often unwarranted. The extensive support from staff and fellow students made a world of difference. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve learned how to juggle enjoying my time while managing the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.

As I progress, I feel thankful for the growth and experiences this year has provided. If you’re about to commence your own university adventure, remember: take that leap, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’re capable of this!
