**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been timid and introverted, stepping into the unknown was intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year that has been life-changing—filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights did I gain, and what is my current situation?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the foremost challenges I encountered was forming friendships. Entering university can be a daunting experience, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your major worries as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation—just a few days before the term officially began—I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Now, looking back, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the most amazing friends I’ve ever had. These relationships have become akin to a second family for me, both within my program and throughout the university. The biggest aids for me were small actions, like initiating conversations with others who were feeling just as uncertain as I was.

The main takeaway I gained? Embrace risk early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, just remain true to yourself. With the rich diversity at Imperial, you will definitely connect with individuals who share your passions and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material was another considerable obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the difference between the first term and the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe your peers studying and performing well.

What supported me during these moments of self-doubt was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, there’s a good chance others are grappling with the same issue. The best course of action is to ask for assistance—be it from fellow students or your instructors. Learning to seek help is perhaps the greatest asset you can acquire during your first year.

### Encouragement from the Materials Department

A highlight of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials department staff. They are genuinely invested in our success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and readily listened to our worries.

Even though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken that step much earlier. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made early on, and it proved to be immensely fulfilling. It enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which was invaluable.

If I could offer one piece of advice, it would be to make the most of the support systems you have at your disposal. Whether for academic assistance or pastoral care, there’s no such thing as too much support.

### Essential Lessons

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. There is an abundance of support available, from faculty to fellow students, and you will never truly be on your own.

This year has shown me how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with times of joy and excitement. It has been a journey of transformation, and I eagerly anticipate what the next year will bring.
