**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been somewhat shy and introverted, diving into this new environment felt quite overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with learning, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve grown and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Confronting the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might relate—it’s a widespread concern. On my first day in student housing, I spent the entire time locked in my room, too apprehensive to step outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.

I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began through brief conversations with fellow students who were sharing similar feelings. The greatest lesson I took away? Make that effort at the beginning of the year. Even if you’re not quite ready or feel uncomfortable, there will be an abundance of icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. And above all, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Navigating the Academic Transition

Adjusting to the demands and complexity of university-level coursework was another challenge I faced. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you measure up.

What aided me in this transition was recognizing that everyone is grappling with similar concerns. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely others are experiencing the same challenges. The essential strategy is to reach out for assistance—be it from your classmates or faculty members. Developing the ability to seek help is perhaps the most crucial skill you can acquire in your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open with us and offered guidance whenever necessary.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, but I wish I would have engaged with it sooner. Taking on the role of year well-being representative was one of the first initiatives I undertook, and it ultimately proved to be a fantastic choice. It enabled me to cultivate connections with staff members, which became invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the resources and assistance at your disposal—you can never have excessive support.

### Insights Gained

This year has illuminated for me that much of the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was mostly unfounded. With the abundance of support from both the staff and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. I also discovered how to harmonize the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

In retrospect, I see a year marked by personal growth, resilience, and unforgettable memories. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, remember to take that chance, seek help when necessary, and embrace the opportunities that come your way.
