**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty as I prepared to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had consistently been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase of life felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with growth, challenges, and joy, I recognize how much I’ve absorbed and how far I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting features of commencing university was the obstacle of forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this might echo as one of your largest worries as well. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, just days ahead of term commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. These connections have come to feel like a second family, both within my course and throughout the university. The secret? Taking that initial plunge and engaging in small conversations with others facing similar situations.

What I’ve realized is that stepping outside of your comfort zone early is always worthwhile. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t stress—there are plenty of icebreaker events and chances to reach out to others. Above all, just be yourself. With so many diverse individuals at university, you’re guaranteed to find others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Facing Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic expectations of university represented another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university-level study was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even tougher. It’s easy to second-guess yourself when you observe others studying and think you’re lagging behind.

What helped me navigate this territory was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are others are too. The best approach is to reach out for assistance—either from peers or faculty. Learning to ask for support is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate during your initial year.

### The Supportive Faculty in Materials
On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our issues and providing advice.

While I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Taking up the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the beginning of the year. This role enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal positions or informal conversations, connecting with the faculty is one of the best investments you can make for yourself. My biggest takeaway? Make the most of the available support systems—there’s no such thing as too much help!

### Insights Gained
As I reflect on this year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt—both before and during university—was often misplaced. With the abundance of support from faculty and fellow students, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly isolated. This year has shown me how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while still finding time for joy and fun.

As I look forward, I’m eager to keep growing, learning, and maximizing my university experience. To anyone on the brink of starting their own journey, my advice is straightforward: embrace the obstacles, seek assistance, and don’t hesitate to take that first leap.
