**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about the road ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For an individual who had always been introverted and quiet, launching into this new chapter felt intimidating. Now, as I look back on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments, I realize just how impactful this experience has been. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

A major obstacle I encountered at the beginning of university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. On my initial day in student housing, just a few days before classes officially commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The secret was taking that initial step—starting casual conversations with individuals who were equally new and apprehensive. Gradually, these interactions evolved into friendships that feel like an extended family. What I’ve discovered is that it’s always beneficial to step outside your comfort zone early on. If you’re not quite ready immediately, that’s perfectly okay—there are numerous icebreaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to find others who resonate with your interests and ideals.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the increase in difficulty from A-levels to university. The transition wasn’t straightforward, and the jump from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s completely normal to feel daunted at times and to wonder if you’re up to the task, particularly when you observe others studying intensely.

What assisted me in managing these feelings was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, chances are others are as well. The best advice I can offer is to ask for assistance—be it from peers or faculty. Learning to seek help is one of the most essential skills you can acquire during your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly care about student success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me foster strong relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the abundant support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve acquired the ability to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and relaxation.

Ultimately, my first year in Materials Science and Engineering has been a journey of self-exploration, growth, and connection. For anyone about to embark on their own university journey, keep in mind: take that leap, face the challenges head-on, and never hesitate to ask for help. You’ve got this!
