**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed by feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who once felt shy and withdrawn, moving into this new phase felt like plunging into unknown waters. Now, as I contemplate an academic year brimming with development, trials, and unforgettable happenings, I appreciate the knowledge I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the process of making friends. If you’re a future student perusing this, you might experience similar sentiments. On my inaugural day at student accommodation, I spent a significant amount of time in my room, too apprehensive to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

These connections did not materialize instantaneously but began with simple gestures—such as engaging in light conversation with others who were equally new and uncertain. With time, I discovered a second family at Imperial and learned a vital lesson: taking that first step to reach out to others is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared immediately, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Above all, just be authentic. With a myriad of distinctive personalities and backgrounds at university, you are sure to connect with those who resonate with you.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the educational requirements of university was yet another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level studies was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when confronted with difficult material, particularly when you observe peers who seem to have it all sorted out.

What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that I was not alone. Everyone was experiencing the same challenges, and if I struggled to grasp something, it was likely that others were too. The essential factor was to seek help—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for assistance became one of the most critical skills I honed during my first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of support, the personnel in the Materials department are phenomenal. They truly desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication and were always prompt to address our inquiries.

Even though I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. Taking on the position of a well-being representative early on was one of the steps I took, and it proved to be a gratifying experience. It enabled me to forge ties with staff members, which became incredibly valuable. Whether through structured roles or informal exchanges, connecting with the faculty is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My primary takeaway? Never hesitate to utilize the support systems available—you can never have an excess of assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the year, I now realize that the apprehension I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I also learned how to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines with periods of delight and enjoyment.

As I progress, I carry forward the lessons of resilience, self-awareness, and the importance of venturing into the unknown. For anyone on the verge of commencing their university journey, remember that while the path ahead may appear intimidating, it is also teeming with chances for development, bonding, and remarkable moments.
