**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the cusp of my first-year experience in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had been inherently timid and introverted, plunging into the vast sea of university life was an intimidating thought. Looking back now, I recognize a year packed with personal development, challenges, and many unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gathered, and what is my current situation?

### Conquering the Challenge of Friendships

One of the most substantial obstacles I encountered at the outset of university life was forging friendships. For numerous incoming students, this can be among the most daunting elements of beginning university. I recall my initial day of moving into my accommodation—just a few days before classes commenced. I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. These relationships have evolved into a second family for me, both within my academic program and throughout the university. What changed? It all initiated with casual conversations and connecting with others who shared similar feelings.

The critical lesson I gleaned here is that taking an initial step of courage early on is invaluable. If you’re not entirely comfortable or ready, that’s completely fine—there are numerous networking events and chances to meet new people as the year progresses. Above all, remember to be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the curriculum. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even tougher. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your own skills when observing your peers studying and wondering if you’re keeping pace.

What assisted me in managing this situation was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, likely, others are as well. The crucial point is to seek assistance. This might be the most essential skill to cultivate in your initial year—don’t hold back from reaching out to fellow students or faculty for help.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the topic of faculty, one of the standout highlights of my first year has been the remarkable support from the Materials department. The instructors and staff are genuinely committed to student success and show understanding towards the hurdles we encounter. They keep open lines of communication and are consistently ready to address our queries.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the responsibility of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took early on, and it proved to be an exceptional choice. It enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which has been invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, developing relationships with your lecturers and tutors is one of the wisest decisions you can make for yourself. My most significant lesson here? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—there is no such thing as too much help!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. There exists a vast network of support available, from faculty to fellow classmates, to assist you in overcoming challenges. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of happiness and fun.

As I look back on this past year, I am appreciative of the growth I’ve achieved and the relationships I’ve established. If you are on the brink of beginning your own university adventure, remember that it’s alright to feel anxious—but also be aware that you are entering a realm brimming with opportunities, support, and individuals who genuinely wish to see you excel.
