**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I embarked on a path that was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. I was getting ready to begin my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who has always been timid and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year packed with development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I recognize how life-changing this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming friendships. Entering university can be overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be one of your primary concerns as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Zipping forward to today, I can confidently say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life here at Imperial. I’ve discovered a second family, both throughout the university and within my course. It all began with small actions—starting light conversations with others who were navigating the same experience.
What did I take away? Taking that initial step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you aren’t ready or comfortable immediately, that’s completely fine! There are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more formidable. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your potential when you observe others studying and fear you’re trailing behind.
What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle with a concept, it’s likely that others are having a tough time too. The key is to seek assistance. This could be the most critical skill to develop in your first year—reach out to your classmates and teaching staff for help.
### The Value of Support Networks
Speaking of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The professors and tutors truly care about students’ success and are sympathetic to the hurdles we encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year and are always willing to assist.
Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. In the early part of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to create connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly amplify your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt before entering university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unwarranted. There are numerous support systems available, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that you are never truly on your own. This year has instructed me on how to manage the stress stemming from exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment.
In conclusion, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a journey of personal evolution, self-discovery, and learning to welcome challenges. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, take that leap, be your authentic self, and remember to lean on the support that surrounds you.
