**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with an eager sense of anxiety as I readied myself to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Having always been somewhat introverted, stepping into this new adventure felt quite daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it was not only demanding but also transformative—rich with personal development, new friendships, and an abundance of unforgettable moments. So, what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the anxiety surrounding friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might relate to these feelings. I recall spending my initial day in student housing, secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The pivotal moment for me was acknowledging that everyone else was experiencing similar feelings. Engaging in casual conversations with others in the same situation eventually led to bonds that now feel like family. My recommendation? Take that step forward early. Even if you feel unprepared, there are numerous networking events and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied group of individuals at university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Adapting to the academic challenges and workload was another considerable obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your skills when you observe others studying and excelling seemingly effortlessly.

What aided me was realizing I wasn’t the only one grappling with these feelings. Most likely, if you find something difficult to grasp, others are facing similar struggles. The vital step is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek support is arguably one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Compassionate Staff

In terms of support, the team in the Materials department has been exceptional. They sincerely want students to thrive and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and providing direction.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the role of a well-being representative for the year was one of the bold steps I took early on, and it turned out to be a fulfilling opportunity. It enabled me to establish connections with staff, which proved immensely helpful. Whether through formal responsibilities or informal conversations, getting acquainted with your professors and tutors is one of the most advantageous actions you can undertake for your success. Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much!

### Key Takeaways

Throughout this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced before and during my university journey was often unfounded. With the abundant support from both staff and peers, I realized I was never genuinely alone. Additionally, I discovered how to juggle exam pressures and deadlines while still finding time for enjoyment and relaxation.

Looking back, I acknowledge the extent of my growth, both academically and personally. If you’re about to start your own university adventure, know that feeling apprehensive is completely normal. Trust the process, take those bold steps, and remember to reach out for help when needed. You will find your path—and perhaps even a second family—along the way.
