**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, doubt, and hesitation as I geared up for my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown was quite daunting. Reflecting now, I perceive a year that proved not just demanding but also pivotal, marked by personal development, academic challenges, and numerous unforgettable instances. So, what insights has this year provided me, and how do I stand now?

### Confronting the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the task of forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days ahead of the semester, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life—friends who feel like family.

What shifted? It began with casual conversations and the realization that everyone else was facing similar situations. Taking that initial step to engage with others truly transformed everything. If this worries you, take heart! Universities, including Imperial, provide ample ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with new people. My primary takeaway? Be authentic. With such a rich and varied community, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was stark, and the change from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to experience feelings of being overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others seemingly flourishing. But here’s the reality: everyone is grappling with similar hurdles.

If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, likely, others are too. The secret is to seek assistance—be it from fellow students or faculty members. This was a crucial lesson I learned throughout my first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science and Engineering department at Imperial is remarkable. The instructors and support personnel genuinely prioritize students’ well-being and achievements. They recognize the trials we encounter and maintain open lines of communication all year round.

I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral resources available until late in the year, and I regret not doing it sooner. Taking on the position of year well-being representative enabled me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be an enriching experience. Whether through official roles or informal engagements, forming relationships with staff can significantly impact your journey. My suggestion? Make the most of the support systems in place—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to and during my university tenure—were unfounded. With the backing of friends, faculty, and the broader university community, I managed to overcome the challenges and even find joy amidst the stress of exams and deadlines.

This year has imparted the lesson that I’m never truly alone, that seeking help is a strength, and that it’s entirely feasible to balance diligence with enjoyment. For anyone gearing up to commence their university journey, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, seize the chances, and believe that you’ll carve your own path.
