**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and cautious, venturing into the unknown was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can truly appreciate how much I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely this is a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment came when I took a risk and began initiating brief conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings as I was. Gradually, those minor exchanges blossomed into significant friendships. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all sparked by a simple act of bravery.
What I’ve realized is that it’s beneficial to step outside your comfort zone early on. If you’re not prepared right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Another significant challenge was adapting to the rigorous workload and the complexity of the course material. There was a stark increase from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities, particularly when you see others engrossed in their studies and appearing to have it all together.
What aided me was realizing that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The critical factor is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for support was probably the most valuable lesson I gained from my first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and offering guidance.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. Engaging with the staff was one of the best choices I made. Early on, I became a year well-being representative, which allowed me to strengthen my connections with faculty members. This ended up being invaluable, and I strongly encourage finding ways to bond with your lecturers and tutors. They are there to assist you, so utilize the resources and support they provide—you can never receive too much help!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before embarking on university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unfounded. With the extensive support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Looking back, I can see how much I’ve evolved, both academically and personally. Taking those first steps—whether it was reaching out to new acquaintances or seeking help—made all the difference. If you’re on the verge of starting your university adventure, know that it’s completely natural to feel anxious. Embrace the challenges, lean on the support surrounding you, and above all, savor the experience.
