**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and apprehension about what was ahead. I was gearing up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Looking back now, I can see an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. But what exactly have I gleaned from this year, and what is my current standing?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Significant Challenge
One of the most intimidating aspects of commencing university was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely a concern of yours as well. I recall my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term kicked off. I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships during my time here at Imperial, both within my program and across the university.
I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same things as I was. The crucial lesson I took away? Make that effort at the outset of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, do not worry—there will be abundant ice-breaker activities and chances to socialize. And most importantly, simply be yourself. With an array of diverse personalities and backgrounds at university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Stress
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexities of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was glaring, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more striking. It’s easy to become daunted and question your abilities, particularly when you observe others appearing to manage seamlessly. But here’s what helped me: remembering that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find it hard to grasp something, it’s likely that others do as well.
The most significant lesson I absorbed during my first year? Don’t shy away from seeking help. Whether it’s from fellow classmates or faculty members, reaching out for assistance is vital. You’re not expected to navigate it all by yourself.
### The Supportive Faculty in Materials Science
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials Science department are outstanding. They truly care about your success and recognize the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and providing direction. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build rapport with the staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make full use of the support offered—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Key Insights from My First Year
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before entering university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. There are extensive support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring you are never genuinely alone. I’ve figured out how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while also enjoying myself, and I’ve become more self-assured in the process.
To anyone preparing to commence their university adventure: welcome the challenges, take those bold moves, and remember that assistance is always accessible when you require it.
