**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been timid and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, trials, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how significant this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I confronted was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a major worry for you too. On my first day in student housing, a few days before classes officially commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The secret? Taking that first step. Engaging in conversations with others in similar situations allowed me to establish a second family here at Imperial. If you harbor concerns about this, don’t fret! There are numerous icebreaker events and occasions to connect with fellow students. The crucial lesson I’ve grasped is to remain authentic. With such a varied student community, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the workload and complexity of university-level studies was another major obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others study as if they have everything figured out.
What benefitted me most was acknowledging that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others are as well. The best piece of advice I can offer is to reach out for assistance—whether from peers or faculty members. Cultivating the ability to seek support is one of the most essential skills you can acquire in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They sincerely care about student success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication and offered continual guidance.
I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support options until late in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. Early on, I took a brave step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to engage with faculty on a deeper level. Nurturing connections with faculty members is invaluable, and there are abundant opportunities for doing so. My main takeaway is to make the most of the assistance and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
This year has enlightened me to the fact that the anxiety I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while cherishing moments of joy and enjoyment.
Looking back, I can see the immense personal growth I’ve undergone, and I’m eager to continue this journey. To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure: take that plunge, seek help, and seize the opportunities that come your way. You can do it!
