**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my previously reserved and shy self was used to. Reflecting back now, I recognize a transformative academic year—characterized by personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be on your mind as well. On my first day of moving into accommodation, just a few days before the term started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like family.
What changed? It all began with casual conversations. I realized that everyone else was experiencing similar feelings, and taking that initial step to connect truly shifted things for me. My recommendation? Embrace a leap of faith at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the workload and academic demands was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university life was striking, and the shift from the first semester to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your abilities when surrounded by exemplary peers.
What aided me was the realization that everybody is navigating the same experience. If you’re having difficulties grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial aspect is to seek help—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for assistance is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Importance of Supportive Staff
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely desire for students to flourish and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and were always ready to address our concerns.
Though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the end of the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took early on, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It afforded me the opportunity to forge connections with staff members, which was incredibly beneficial. There are many ways to interact with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—it exists for a purpose, and there’s no such thing as too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was often unfounded. Thanks to the plentiful support from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. I’ve learned how to manage exam-related and deadline-induced stress while also enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve evolved—not solely academically, but personally. Starting university may appear overwhelming, but with the right attitude and an openness to embrace the challenges, it can turn out to be one of the most fulfilling journeys of your life.
