**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of nervousness, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always tended to be shy and introverted, stepping into this new phase felt incredibly daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year enriched with personal growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I can assert that it has been a life-changing chapter. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I currently find myself?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might be experiencing similar fears. On my initial day in student housing, merely a few days prior to the beginning of term, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can confidently say I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who accompany me on this journey and enhance its value.

What aided my progress? It all initiated with casual conversations. Everyone else was in a comparable situation, and just making an effort to connect changed everything. My major takeaway? Take that leap of faith early in the process. If you don’t feel ready or comfortable right from the start, don’t stress—there will be countless ice-breaker events and chances to mingle with others. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, it’s certain you’ll encounter people who resonate with you.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the academic workload and challenges was another considerable obstacle. The shift from A-levels to university was quite apparent, and the change from the first to second term was even more pronounced. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying and appearing to excel.

What helped me navigate those periods of self-doubt was realizing that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The essential step is to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson I acquired during my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out for support from your classmates or instructors.

### Valuing Supportive Staff

Speaking of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The professors and tutors genuinely care about student success and understand the difficulties we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year and are always available to address our inquiries.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the latter part of the year, I regret not utilizing it sooner. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative for my year was among the best choices I made. It allowed me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, becoming familiar with the staff is one of the best advantages you can give yourself. My recommendation? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the worries I harbored—both before entering university and throughout the year—were unfounded. With the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of laughter and enjoyment.

To anyone commencing their university adventure: embrace the obstacles, rely on the support around you, and don’t hesitate to take that initial step. You’ll evolve in ways you never considered, and you’ll emerge stronger on the other side.
