**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed by feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had previously been timid and introverted, plunging into this fresh phase of life was indeed daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can ponder what I’ve absorbed and my current position.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may rank among your greatest worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes kicked off, I sequestered myself in my room for the whole day, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced.
These connections have morphed into a second family for me, beginning with simple chats with individuals who were equally apprehensive. The most crucial lesson I absorbed? Take that leap of faith early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be plenty of icebreakers and gatherings to facilitate your connections. Above all, simply be yourself. Given the rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter others with shared interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the demands and scholarly intensity was another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university life was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more daunting. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or to question your capabilities when observing others flourishing. However, I discovered that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re grappling with a topic, it’s likely that others are too.
The crucial step is to seek assistance. This may be the essential skill to hone during your inaugural year. Whether connecting with classmates or reaching out to faculty, don’t shy away from asking questions.
### Encouragement from the Materials Department
On the topic of faculty, the assistance within the Materials department is truly remarkable. The instructors and mentors are genuinely invested in students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They encourage open communication throughout the academic year and are perpetually willing to assist.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. Serving as a year well-being representative enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to foster relationships with staff, and I highly advise seizing them. My key insight? Don’t hesitate to leverage the resources and support systems made available to you—they exist for a purpose.
### Insights Gained
This past year has illuminated for me that the anxiety I felt before entering university—and at various points during the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the vast support accessible from both faculty and fellow students, I recognized that I was never truly isolated. I also learned how to juggle the pressures from exams and deadlines while still finding time for enjoyment and happiness.
Reflecting on my journey, I acknowledge how much I’ve evolved, and I’m eager to continue this path. To anyone on the verge of beginning their university journey: embrace the hurdles, take those brave steps, and remember that support is perpetually close at hand.
