**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted, stepping into the unknown was not a familiar experience for me. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize that it has been a period of significant transformation—filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable memories. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the process of making friends. For a lot of incoming students, this is one of the primary worries about starting university, and I was certainly no different. On my first day at the student residence, a few days before classes officially started, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to walk out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to the present, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve met here have evolved into my second family. It all began with small interactions—engaging in light conversation with others who shared similar feelings as mine.

The most valuable lesson learned? Take that leap of faith right from the start. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaking events and chances to engage with others. And above all, simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover people who share your interests and core beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Another considerable challenge was acclimatizing to the workload and the complexities of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more significant. It wasn’t always easy to maintain confidence, particularly when observing peers studying and feeling like I wasn’t keeping pace.

What aided me during these times was the realization that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was grappling with similar difficulties, and chances were, if I struggled to comprehend something, others were too. The pivotal takeaway? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, reaching out can truly change the game.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and support staff genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They maintain accessible communication throughout the year, addressing our issues and offering guidance.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to cultivate meaningful connections with staff members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. Whether through structured roles or informal chats, getting to know the staff is among the most advantageous things you can do for yourself. My suggestion? Make full use of the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Reflections Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I held—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. With the extensive support options available from faculty and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone. This past year has equipped me with the skills to manage exam-related stress and deadlines while still embracing joy and fun.

As I progress, I am thankful for the personal growth I’ve undergone and the relationships I’ve fostered. To anyone about to start their university adventure, remember that while the challenges may appear overwhelming, a wealth of support and opportunities awaits you.
