**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was preparing to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Entering into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a time filled with development, obstacles, and many unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my standing today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the process of making friends. For countless individuals, this is among the most daunting aspects of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it may be something that concerns you as well. On my first day in dorms, a few days prior to the official beginning of term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to go out and meet new people.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It all commenced with small actions—sparking casual dialogues with others who were just as anxious as I was.
So, what have I taken away from this? I learned that taking risks at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you aren’t prepared or don’t feel comfortable immediately, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to find individuals who resonate with you.
### Adapting to the Academic Expectations
Another major challenge was adjusting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was a significant leap, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more notable. Being in such a demanding academic atmosphere can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when observing others studying and feeling as if you’re falling behind.
What assisted me during this period was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance. This might be the most valuable lesson I learned in my first year. Whether it’s connecting with your classmates or asking for help from staff, seeking assistance is a vital skill to nurture.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and support staff truly wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year, addressing our issues and providing support.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. At the year’s onset, I made the initiative to become a well-being representative. This position helped me forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are various ways to connect with staff, and doing so can immensely enhance your university experience. My primary lesson here? Take full advantage of the support that’s accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has reminded me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was frequently unfounded. With the wealth of support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned how to balance the pressure of exams and deadlines with joyful moments and fun.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a path of personal development, persistence, and exploration. To anyone on the brink of starting their own university journey: take the plunge, face the challenges, and remember—you’ve got this.
