**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I commenced a journey that was filled with trepidation, fear, and uncertainty. I was about to start my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt overwhelmingly challenging. Reflecting now, I realize it has been a year marked by personal development, hurdles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?

### Taking the Plunge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this is a major worry when starting university, and I felt the same. On my first day in student housing, merely days before term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships I could have wished for. Here at Imperial, I have found a second family, both within the university environment and my program. It all initiated with light conversation and connecting with others who were equally anxious.

What did I take away from this? Firstly, making that initial leap is vital. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be an abundance of ice-breaker activities and chances to socialize. Secondly, be authentic. With such a wide array of individuals at Imperial, you’re certain to find those who align with your values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and workload proved to be another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the jump from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your skills when you see others studying and seemingly thriving.

What aided me through this ordeal was the understanding that everyone else is facing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are, others are too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is perhaps the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of support, the staff within the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely wish for students to flourish and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our inquiries and offering advice.

I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I stepped outside my comfort zone by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained
This year has illustrated to me that the anxiety I felt, both prior to and during university, was often exaggerated. With the extensive support from both staff and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I discovered how to navigate the stress from exams and deadlines while still cherishing joyful moments.

In hindsight, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has been a period of personal evolution, academic trials, and the establishment of lifelong friendships. To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: take the risk, embrace the support around you, and remember to savor the journey.
