**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and timid, plunging into this new phase was quite daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I can’t help but ponder the lessons I’ve absorbed and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I faced was forming friendships. The start of university can feel nerve-wracking, and if you are an incoming student reading this, it’s probably one of your top concerns as well. On my initial day in student housing, mere days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, paralyzed by nerves and too anxious to introduce myself. Fast forward to now, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
The breakthrough arrived when I made the choice to take incremental steps—striking up casual conversations with those who were similarly situated. Gradually, these small initiatives evolved into significant friendships, and I discovered a second family at Imperial. My key takeaway? Make the effort early. Even if you don’t feel prepared or comfortable in the beginning, don’t fret—there will be many icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic load and complexity of university courses was another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university presented a stark contrast, and the transition between the first and second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and worrying if you are managing to keep pace.
What supported me during these overwhelming moments was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The important thing is to seek assistance—be it from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to request help is arguably the most critical skill to hone during your first year.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are sympathetic to the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained clear communication, addressing our issues and offering direction.
I didn’t really utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had done so sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This role provided me the opportunity to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize the resources and help at your disposal—you can never have too much support.
### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has demonstrated that the apprehension I experienced—both before and during university—was often unwarranted. Thanks to the ample support from staff and peers, I was never entirely alone. I’ve discovered how to juggle the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
As I progress, I am thankful for the personal development, friendships, and experiences that have defined my first year. To anyone on the brink of beginning their university adventure: take the plunge, embrace the hurdles, and remember that assistance is always available.
