**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and reserved, stepping into this new phase felt like plunging into the abyss. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered early in my journey was the challenge of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, you might resonate with this concern too. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who truly feel like family.
What shifted? It all began with simple conversations and realizing that everyone else felt similarly. Taking that first step to interact with others was transformative. If you’re apprehensive about social situations, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect await you. The essential part is to remain true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re certain to discover individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the intensified workload and complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was striking, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more formidable. It’s natural to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities, especially when witnessing others seemingly excel.
What aided me in maneuvering through this was acknowledging that everyone faces difficulties at some juncture. If you find a concept puzzling, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same challenge. The fundamental lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking help—be it from classmates or faculty. Requesting assistance isn’t a sign of fragility; it’s an essential skill that will benefit you throughout your university journey and beyond.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
One of the most remarkable aspects of my experience has been the outstanding support provided by the Materials department staff. They are genuinely invested in student success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and were always ready to address our issues.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had realized its significance sooner. Accepting the position of year well-being representative early on enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or casual interactions, becoming acquainted with the staff is one of the wisest things you can do for yourself. My most significant takeaway? Make the most of the resources and support networks available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Reflections
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the apprehensions I harbored—both prior to and during university—were misplaced. With the abundance of support from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with joyful and enjoyable experiences.
If there’s one pearl of wisdom I’d offer to incoming students, it’s this: don’t hesitate to take that bold step. Whether it’s stepping out of your comfort zone to forge friendships, asking for assistance when required, or seizing new opportunities, these courageous moments will enrich your university experience immeasurably.
